Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder. It is characterised by an
increase in compulsive eating in the form of binges, during which the patient
experiences the feeling of loss of control over how much they eat. This binge is
normally followed by self-induced vomiting or the use of laxatives.
A binge is characterised by the ingestion of food in a very short space of time
(i.e.,in a period of two hours) in greater quantities than the majority of
people would consume over a similar period and in the same circumstances.
