Artificial nutrition is used for individuals whose digestive systems do not
operate normally,or do not function at all,and who are therefore at risk of
malnutrition. Enteral nutrition is the supply of nutrients through the digestive
tract, generally through a catheter. It is used when the digestive system has
minimal functionality and motor function. Parenteral nutrition is the intravenous supply of nutrients. It is used when
the digestive system is not capable of performing any of its functions. The enteral formulas supplied contain the nutrients necessary to reverse or
prevent malnutrition, and are recognised as “Foods for Special Medical
Purposes”.
